Big Easy Tour stalwart Reggie Adams shot a confident 70 at Fancourt’s Montagu course to lead pre-qualifying for the Dimension Data Pro-Am, which kicks off on Thursday.
The Pro-Am plays across all three of Fancourt’s courses – The Links, Montagu and Outeniqua – but further challenges face Adams as he squares up against defending champion Hennie Otto.
Adams took on 45 hopefuls on Wednesday, but was quick to pull clear of field after he birdied both the fourth and fifth, enjoying his first taste of two-under.
He turned in 34 strokes and soon after leapt to four-under when he eagled the 10th. The back stretch tested the youngster and he dropped at the 12th and 18th, but had done enough to overcome the dropped shots and closed the day in a share of first.
Adams took a share of 25th at the Telkom PGA Pro-Am in 2011 and clearly has no problem with the change of style and pace presented to a professional by his amateur playing partner. He missed the cut at last year’s Di-Data Pro-Am and will be determined to not let this week’s opportunity slip.
Joining Adams was Martin du Toit, who had a solid run of things over the final few holes and closed the round at two-under. Birdies at the ninth and 10th were negated by drops at the fifth and 14th, but du Toit went on to birdie the 16th and 18th and secure his place.
In a share of third were Dismas Indiza, Michael du Toit and Peter Wilson, who all closed the round at one-under. It was sheer determination that earned Indiza his spot after the Kenyan bogeyed three in a row from the second. He did not drop a further shot and clawed his way to one-under.
In a share of sixth at one-over were Francois van Vuuren, Mark Fensham, Mickey Hough and Rossouw Loubser. Gary Hill closed the day at two-over and went straight into a playoff with Henk Alberts, Paul Bradshaw and Michael Scholz as the quartet battled for the 10th and final spot. Hill emerged triumphant.
